Creative & communication

They have followers. Are they the people your brand needs?

Assess creator and influencer partnerships through audience fit, credibility, execution, usage rights and meaningful results.

A profile can look impressive in a presentation: a large following, several widely viewed videos and a recognizable style. A marketing collaboration still needs a few more questions answered.

  • Who watches, in which markets, and for which subjects?
  • Can the creator explain the product credibly?
  • Are we buying access to an audience, content production, paid distribution or a combination?

The answers shape selection, the brief and evaluation. Follower count is one piece of information, not a strategy.

Influencer marketing, content production and UGC have different roles

An influencer collaboration can provide access to a community and a recommendation within an established relationship. A production collaboration can deliver useful creative even when the creator has a small audience.

UGC can mean content spontaneously created by users. In commercial practice, it also describes commissioned creator content presented in a personal, informal style. Keep the distinction clear: paid content does not become an independent testimonial because it looks casual.

We may need a demonstration, tutorial, story, substantiated comparison or example of use. Define the job before choosing the person or assessing the fee.

Look beyond follower count to the audience

Country, language, city and age data can help where available. Also consider the subjects attracting people, why they follow the creator and how those interests connect with the product’s purpose.

A large international audience may be less useful to a local business than a smaller community within its service area. For a product sold across markets, international reach may be relevant. Size alone decides neither case.

Ask for recent content and representative results, including sponsored work where available. One viral video may be an exception. The assessment should show variation as well as the best result.

Define engagement before comparing it

An engagement rate based on followers is not directly comparable with one based on reach or views. The period, format and included actions also matter. Align the definitions first.

Comments can reveal whether people discuss the subject, ask questions or simply react to a funny moment. Neither comments nor analytics tools can perfectly certify audience authenticity.

Unusual growth or repetitive interactions warrant investigation; they do not prove fraud on their own. Ask for context rather than drawing a categorical conclusion from an automated score.

Credibility depends on the fit with the product

A thoughtful explanation can help people understand an offer. Expertise in one category, however, does not automatically transfer to another. A style that works for entertainment may need adapting for a complex service.

Check that demonstrations are realistic and claims can be supported. Do not ask someone to imply months of experience with a product received yesterday. Technical, medical and other regulated claims need particular care.

People can recognize a commercial recommendation and still find it useful. Relevance, explanation and an honest context create that value. Hiding the relationship is unnecessary.

Include disclosure in the brief

EU rules require sponsored recommendations to be clearly identifiable. The benefit may be a product, service or other consideration, not only payment. Plan disclosure for the specific content and platform. Your Europe: advertising through influence

Agree on who checks disclosure, product claims and offer terms. A platform’s labeling feature can help implement disclosure but does not replace reviewing the complete message.

Transparency helps the viewer understand the context of the recommendation and helps brand and creator define the nature of their collaboration.

The brief must guide the demonstration

A useful brief explains the objective, audience, use case, available evidence and claims to avoid. It clarifies the offer and next step while leaving room for the creator’s understanding of their community.

An unsuitable script may produce technically correct but unconvincing content. No guidance at all may produce an attractive video that fails to explain the product or makes the wrong promise.

Agree approval stages, essential information, final deliverables and revision rounds. For seasonal campaigns, confirm the offer and deadline before publication. Later commercial changes may require rework.

A production fee does not define every usage right

Agree where and for how long the material may appear: creator profile, brand accounts, website, newsletter or ads. Territory, duration, exclusivity, source files, editing rights and format adaptations may all matter.

Check music, people appearing in the content and other protected elements separately. Audio available for an organic post is not automatically licensed for every commercial use. Set these conditions before production, with the necessary contractual checks.

Technical permissions are separate too. TikTok allows creators’ posts to be used in Spark Ads with their authorization. Platform permissions and the rights agreed in the collaboration must align. TikTok: Spark Ads

One example: two collaborations, two roles

Imagine a furniture brand comparing a creator with a broad audience and one with a smaller community interested in interiors. This fictional example does not imply the smaller account is automatically better.

The first might introduce the brand to new people. The second might explain dimensions, materials and how the product fits a room. When the goal is to produce demonstrations for ads, filming and explanation skills may matter more than organic reach.

Compare the role and full cost. The same fee might cover one post or a set of reusable assets, variations and usage rights. Proposals become comparable once those deliverables are clear.

What are we buying through the collaboration?

Choose the role first, then define the result that matters.

  • ROLE

Audience access, content production or advertising?

  • AUDIENCE

Who follows the creator, and why?

  • DEMONSTRATION

What can the creator explain and support?

  • USE

Where, how long and with what rights?

Illustrative framework. Application depends on the project’s context and data.

Assess the collaboration’s role, audience, demonstration and usage rights, then measure the outcome relevant to its purpose.

Evaluate more than a tracking code

A link or code identifies some actions, but not everyone influenced will use it. Codes can also circulate beyond the creator’s audience. Views, clicks and attributed orders describe different parts of the result.

For awareness, assess relevant exposure and contact quality within the limits of the data. For inquiries, assess relevance. For sales, examine contribution after costs, cancellations and returns. For production, assess the assets, rights and opportunities for future use.

Do not add creators’ reach figures as though every viewer were unique: audiences overlap. Attributed orders do not independently establish the collaboration’s incremental effect. Where feasible, tests can provide better evidence.

Collaboration must be integrated into the rest of the communication

The landing page, stock, support and brand advertising need to follow through on the interest created. A creator can explain a product well but cannot permanently compensate for an unclear offer or a broken buying experience.

At NOT MORE., we define the collaboration’s role before selecting creators and agreeing on the brief, deliverables, usage and evaluation. We connect the material with the communication and promotion strategy so the investment has a clear purpose.

What can this collaboration contribute to our audience and objective, under conditions we can actually support? That is the useful starting question.
