Beyond digital

You put your logo next to a show. What did you build for the brand?

Exposure is one component of a media partnership. The strategic question is what relationship you want to build through that association.

A brand appears before a show. The name is visible, the audience is large and the association seems right. That is the start of a discussion, not a conclusion about effectiveness.

A partnership can make sense for awareness, familiarity or closeness to a particular cultural context. But those objectives have to be defined before the commercial package is evaluated.

A large audience is not enough

We would ask who watches the format, in what context and with what expectations.

  • How relevant is this audience to the company?
  • What does it already know about the brand?
  • What association do we want to strengthen?

A fit does not necessarily mean the company’s product appears in the show’s subject matter. There can be a link through values, behaviors or life situations. But that link has to be explained without contrivance.

If the only argument is that there are a lot of viewers, then we are mainly buying exposure. And we have to compare the offer with other options that can deliver the same objective.

We buy rights, not imaginary possibilities

A package may include certain appearances, certain periods and certain uses of the materials. We would not assume that the sponsorship automatically lets us use footage from the show, the host’s image or the production’s brand in any advertising.

We would clarify the rights before the concept: channels, duration, territories, approvals, exclusivity and any limitations. Otherwise, we risk building an idea on materials we cannot use.

We would also respect editorial independence. A commercial partnership would not be presented as an editorial recommendation or as a certification of the product’s quality.

What happens after the appearance?

Picture a home products brand associated with a format about practical projects. Outside the program, the brand’s own extension could offer clear guides, original demonstrations and planning tools.

Not every partnership needs a contest, a landing page and every social network. The extension is worth building if it adds something useful and there are resources to sustain it. The brand’s own commercial content would be labeled as such, separate from the program’s editorial content.

The goal is not to repeat the logo in more places. It is to offer a coherent next step for the interest that was created.

Sponsorship is not the same as CSR

An association with an entertainment program does not become a social initiative just by being called one. It can be a legitimate marketing decision, without needing a cause to justify it.

We would also avoid the phrase “free advertising paid for by taxes.” This article does not provide tax guidance. The nature of the contract, the beneficiary, the consideration exchanged and the applicable regime have to be analyzed by specialists before any claim about deductibility or incentives. The broadcasting rules that apply to formats have to be checked separately. [1]

How we would evaluate the investment

We would account for the total cost: the media package, production, additional rights, distribution of the extensions, coordination and measurement. Not just the price of the appearance.

Depending on the objective and budget, we would propose evaluating brand recognition and the intended association. Brand searches or visits can be complementary signals, but they do not prove on their own that the partnership produced the change.

We would also agree when we would walk away: an unsuitable audience, insufficient rights, an unsustainable total cost or no way to evaluate the essential objective.

The logo shows who pays for the association. The strategy has to explain why the association is worth making.

Do you have a partnership opportunity? Let’s evaluate what it can build, not just where it can display the brand.
