DEMAND / SALES

Do you need more leads, or are you losing the opportunities you already have?

When sales fall short, the request to marketing often comes quickly: we need more leads. Sometimes that is exactly what is missing. Sometimes the business is already paying for interest it cannot turn into a useful conversation.

THE STARTING POINT

Follow what happens after the form before asking for more forms.

1. Agree on what the report is counting.

A submitted form, a contactable person, a suitable opportunity and a sale are different stages. If marketing reports the first while sales expects the last, both teams can be correct and still be discussing different things.

Define what makes an inquiry relevant: need, location, budget, timing or criteria specific to the business. Then agree on what evidence moves someone to the next stage. An optimistic CRM label is no substitute for a next step agreed with the prospective customer.

2. Follow one group of inquiries all the way through.

Choose inquiries that arrived during a comparable period and follow them together. Where did they come from? When did someone reply? Were they reached? What was offered? Why did progress stop? A small sample can reveal questions worth investigating; it cannot establish how every campaign performs.

Keep unanswered inquiries, offer mismatch, duplicates and postponed decisions separate. Compare groups that have had enough time to buy. Yesterday’s leads have not had the same opportunity to become sales as those received two months ago.

3. Work on the point where progress stops.

If the message consistently attracts unsuitable people, revisit the offer, qualification and advertising. If suitable inquiries wait to be picked up, clarify routing and response ownership. If good conversations stall, inspect the proposal, availability and next step.

When the journey works and the team has capacity, a controlled budget increase may be appropriate. Agree on what to measure first: suitable opportunities, sales and their cost. Connecting CRM outcomes to the advertising platform can improve measurement; it cannot automatically repair incomplete records.

Fictional example: equal spend and inquiry cohorts observed over the same period.

This difference prompts questions about the journey. It does not prove that faster responses caused the additional sales, and it excludes other acquisition costs.

FOR YOUR NEXT CONVERSATION

Before the next budget increase

  1. Marketing and sales share a definition of a suitable opportunity.

  2. Every inquiry has an owner, a status and a next step.

  3. Reasons for loss are specific enough to act on.

  4. The comparison accounts for the sales cycle and the team’s capacity.

The useful question is where more demand would become more progress. The answer may be better advertising, a clearer process or both, in a deliberate sequence.
