The report shows more conversions at a lower cost each. The sales team, though, says it is talking to very few suitable customers. It can be frustrating to watch a metric improve without seeing the same progress in the business.
Before we change the ads or raise the budget, we ask one question: what action are we counting as a conversion, and what do we know about what happens after it?
A submitted form, a qualified inquiry and a signed contract are different moments. Automation needs a direction and information that represents the result we are after closely enough. Choosing that information is part of the campaign strategy and its implementation.
Three levels that need to connect
The business objective describes the change we want: new clients for a particular service, orders we can fulfill profitably, or users who go on to use a product. The campaign objective defines the role of promotion. The optimization signal is the action or measured value we use within the available setup.
These levels can be close without being the same. An awareness campaign can play a legitimate role before acquisition. A lead campaign can also be judged by the later quality of its inquiries. What matters is that we explain the connection and do not present an intermediate result as complete proof of the commercial objective.
| What the business wants | What it can see at first | What it still needs to learn |
|---|---|---|
| Projects that suit the team | Submitted forms | Relevant inquiries, conversations and contracts |
| Orders with a sustainable contribution | Purchases and their value | Cancellations, returns and the costs included |
| Customers who use a subscription | Accounts created | Activation, usage and valid payments |
The table describes illustrative situations. It does not impose the same campaign structure, and it does not suggest that every stage should be used for bidding at the same time.
A cheap inquiry can become expensive later
In a hypothetical example, two campaigns each spend RON 2,000. The first generates 100 inquiries, 10 of which meet the commercial criteria. The second generates 40 inquiries, 20 of which meet the same criteria.
The cost per form is RON 20 in the first campaign and RON 50 in the second. The cost per qualified inquiry, however, is RON 200 and RON 100 respectively. Which result looks better depends on the question being asked.
The example does not prove profitability or the causal effect of advertising. We would still need to see contracts, their value, the costs and the time the team spent. It shows why a single metric can steer a decision only partly.
Qualification has to be defined consistently. If one team marks every contact as relevant while another requires a real need and a fit with the service, their reports do not describe the same stage.
What we can pass on beyond the form
Google Ads distinguishes between qualified leads and converted leads, based on information from the sales process. With the right setup, these outcomes can be used in measurement. Google Ads: qualified and converted leads
In a project, this can mean integrating the CRM, identifying the inquiry correctly, setting rules for changing its stage and passing on the eligible data. If nobody updates the commercial information, a technical connection will not fill that gap on its own.
We start by agreeing on who confirms the result and when it becomes available. We check for duplicates, cancellations and differences between systems. Processing and passing on data has to respect the applicable conditions; a server-side integration does not remove them.
The technical problem of confirming the action is covered in “The button was clicked. Did the inquiry arrive?” Here the question goes further: does the confirmed action represent the result we actually want to invest in?
Volume and value are different choices
Google distinguishes strategies that pursue the number of conversions from those that use conversion value. In the second case, the meaning and quality of the values we send matter for evaluation. Google Ads: value-based bidding
If we send an order’s revenue, that is the reference point the system receives. We do not assume it automatically knows the product cost, a future return or the contribution left over. Where the tools and the data allow, the setup can be built around other economic values. Google Ads: conversion values
An estimated value for an inquiry is still an estimate. We record how it was calculated and when it needs reviewing. We do not attach large numbers to actions just to produce a more encouraging report.
How close to the sale can the signal be?
A contract may describe the commercial objective better than a simple inquiry, but it may arrive rarely and many weeks later. Choosing the signal also has to take into account how often the information arrives and how long it takes. Google recommends weighing this trade-off when choosing the stage used for value-based optimization. Google Ads: choosing the right goal
For a B2B project with a long cycle, we may need a relevant intermediate milestone and separate tracking of contracts. We explain why that milestone is useful and check regularly that its relationship with the final result still holds.
We do not solve a shortage of data by counting every stage as if it were another customer. Measuring the journey and choosing the actions that guide the campaign call for a coherent setup, adapted to the platform.
What the platform automates and what we still have to decide
Budget, bidding and asset delivery are different mechanisms. Meta describes Advantage+ campaign budget as distributing budget across ad sets, and Highest volume as a strategy that aims for as many results as possible from the budget. Campaign budget · Highest volume
These features do not choose, on the business’s behalf, which economic result is worth pursuing. Nor does automatically combining or delivering assets amount to an experiment that separates the effect of each element. For a deliberately designed comparison, we set the question and the method, as we explain in “If we change everything, what do we learn?”
Features and their names can change. Before implementation, we check the account’s options and the current documentation. The strategy should remain understandable even if a button gets a new name.
Who connects the campaign to the real result
The client’s team confirms what counts as a suitable inquiry, a valid order or a contract, and provides the commercial information available. NOT MORE. can define the measurement plan, build the agreed integrations, set up the campaigns and check that the information reaches the reports correctly.
If a team or agency is already involved, we agree together where we step in. We can take on the analysis, the strategy, the technical implementation or campaign management, separately or in whatever combination is needed. Ongoing monitoring and responsibility for keeping the data up to date are agreed in collaboration.
When reported performance improves, we also check the result in the business. When the two drift apart, we investigate the definitions, the data, the offer and the sales process before concluding that all we need is another ad.
